New spring growth of Moonrise Fullmoon Maple
(Acer shirasawanum 'Moonrise')
For
hundreds of years, gardeners have treasured and admired
Japanese Maples. Prized for the seemingly endless
variety of growth habits, Japanese Maples offer us some
of the most beautiful plants in the world. With foliage
varying from delicate lacy leaves, to bold star-shaped purple
leaves, to variegated leaves blending greens, pinks, and
white, and with branching patterns that show off fantastic
winter silhouettes, Japanese Maples compliment any landscape.
All
Japanese Maples are fairly easy to grow--requiring well-drained
soils. They are cold hardy in our area but will perform
better if planted in locations not directly exposed to cold
winter winds. Red leaved varieties should be planted in
sunny locations to draw out the best color--at the same
time, if these can be planted in locations receiving some
afternoon shade and protection from the hot afternoon summer
sun, the red color will not fade and wash out as much.
Variegated varieties should be planted in locations that
are also shaded during the afternoon. Green leaved
varieties will grow fine in full sun.
Remember
that all Japanese Maples can suffer from leaf scorch when
summer temperatures approach 100 degrees. Some afternoon
shade helps to prevent this as does adequate water supply
during dry spells.
About
the size of Japanese Maples
We
are continually asked how big different varieties of Japanese
Maples will grow. Keep in mind that no tree really
stops growing--they just slow down with age. Ultimate
size will depend on many environmental factors so that it
really is not possible to say exactly how large a certain
tree will grow. Certainly in some of the older arboretums
throughout the world one can find specimans much larger
than the suggested sizes noted here. It can take 50
years for a Bloodgood Maple to reach a size of 25' x25';
and it can take nearly 100 years for a weeping Dissectum
Japanese Maple to become 10'-12' in height and width.
With these time frames in mind, it is easy to say Japanese
Maples are slow growing--by the time one reaches 25', other
trees and shrubs nearby will likely be huge!
And
of course don't forget a most important word for all gardeners--PRUNING!!
A
few judicial cuts on any tree can limit size and also control
just how long it takes for
any
tree to attain maturity.
Ambleside
